A debauched king or a young boy in love? A dutiful hunchback or a loving father? An innocent lover or an unhappy victim? A unique adaptation of the famous romantic story… King Francis I secretly falls in love with his court-jester’s daughter. A group of elite debauchees kidnaps her for fun, not knowing that the king has fallen in love with her. When Blanche finds out that the man of her dreams is the king himself, she cannot play this game any longer, let alone kill her real feelings towards him. She becomes a tragic heroine par excellence, and her father Triboulet’s fate is similar, as he decides to avenge his daughter’s violation and kill the king himself. Victor Hugo, prosaist, poet and playwright, is considered to be one of the most important characters of romanticism. He presented the play The King Takes His Amusement in 1832. Twenty years later, Giuseppe Verdi used this work as a model for his opera Rigoletto. In Roman Polák’s adaptation and the National Theatre Bratislava production, the musical component receives a lot of space, whether it be the solo songs, written specially for particular performers, or the extensive dance compositions. A performance has been created which connects drama with singing and dance, thus creating a stylized musical work with spectacular aesthetics.
