a drama about passionate love, life and death
One of the greatest Czech theatre dramas, it speaks about passion, dreams and desire which cannot be fulfilled. A balladic story of the love between a poor tailor, Eva, and a rich farmer, Mánek, is set in the environment of a Moravian village which is full of dogma, passions and envy. Whatever differs from what is considered to be correct by the majority is condemnable and dubious – whether it is an attitude towards life, religious belief, profession or “only” the belief in love. It is worth mentioning that the first staging of this drama, which reveals the hidden face of village life, had a shocking effect: it was one of the first European dramas to address the topic of women’s emancipation… An inseparable part of the performance is also the new music score, which is freely based on Moravian folk traditions.
