A classic operetta

Countess Maritza is one of the last great classical operettas. It was composed in 1924 by one of the most popular creators of Viennese operetta, Emmerich Kálmán, and this work is also called the most Hungarian operetta. The composer masterfully incorporated colourful melodies and dances from his country in the Countess Maritza.
This comedy, which is full of merry plot twists, enchants with its Gypsy magic, Hungarian temperament and great music – the fiery czardas, Gypsy songs and melodic hit songs (among others Where does love live?, Oh, go to Varasdin and Play, Gypsy!).
The story of the operetta takes place at the beginning of the 20th century at the Hungarian mansion of the beautiful and rich countess Maritza. A paupered count, Tassilo, gets himself hired incognito as the caretaker at Maritza’s mansion in order to make money for the dowry for his sister. Countess Maritza and Count Tassilo fall in love with each other, though the count comes under suspicion of not caring about her love and only being after her money. A series of comic romantic peripeteia leads to a happy conclusion which brings both an explanation of all the misunderstandings and the victory of love.
